For years I have put up with mediocre to bad support for suspend and hibernate on my Linux-only laptops. Well, Windows ain't much better, as I discovered on my recent vacation. Here are some of the problems I ran into:
  • Whatever you do, don't suspend with the GPS plugged into the UPS port. It will try to resume, but then lock up.
  • Don't suspend while playing CIV 3, because after you resume it'll be in the wrong video mode and you'll get some complaint about a video driver feature with a cute name that you know nothing about (PowerPlay, I think it was).
  • Don't let the computer automatically suspend for 5 minutes while you're eating breakfast, because all the putty sessions will be lost when you resume.
With the exception of the GPS device, all the drivers are exactly as shipped by HP, with the latest updates.

Ugh. I'll take Linux over that any day. Software suspend works just dandy these days.
